Description
Pluto’s place in the Roman pantheon was as the ruler of the underworld. Not only was this the final destination for the fallen, but also deep earth, a mysterious place of wealth and resources that was abundant with precious jewels, oil, minerals and resources.
It is into Pluto’s lair that we venture with Patchouli of the Underworld, to see the beauty of glittering underground caverns, to walk in the steps that Persephone took as she ventured deep into the earth.
Patchouli of the Underworld is an unapologetically dark fragrance. It opens with a riot of spices, black and pink peppers, richly combined with lighter touches of mandarin and the opulent kiss of cistus. Patchouli, warm and embracing, is joined by a forceful leather in the heart of the scent and the vivacious spice of carnation. Thick, waxy leaves push their way through the darkness and gloom, bringing life to the deepest of Pluto’s chambers. The base of Patchouli of the Underworld twists towards a warm, animalic, deep tone. The labdanum offers a complex, sophisticated feel, whilst the styrax adds hints of sweetness and spice. Castoreum rounds out the composition with a resonant purr.

“The idea was to build a black patchouli, with a furry texture as black as the panther. It starts with pink and black pepper blended with citruses (bergamot and mandarin) to create a fresh dark top note enhancing the camphor notes of patchouli. I played with a suede leather accord of mate absolute, birch and a smoky twist with cade and rich smoked precious woods to create a synergy between resins and woods and strengthen the character of musk. I softened that with a blend of cistus, labdanum extracts and other amber materials to give the furry and smooth signature. Bits of carnation (spicy rose character) and other floral elements are enriching the fragrance to give it depth and structure.”
