The model of the painting is covered in mystery, possibly depicting Beatrice d'Este, wife of Ludovico Sforza; although, most critics and specialists agree that the beautiful woman posing is no other than Lucrezia Crivelli, the mistress of Ludovico, known as well under the name of “Il Moro”. He is also the legendary patron of Leonardo da Vinci and other artists, being responsible for the final and most productive stage of the Milanese Renaissance.
